OUR SERVICES

OUR SERVICES

OUR PARTNER IN EASTERN UGANDA

Since its inception in 2016, CARICO has worked holistically with communities in Mount Elgon to develop resilient learning, supporting cooperatives through training and provision/loan of processing materials; guiding the set up of cooperatives; pre-purchasing processing material for eventual joint ownership; supporting schools in farming communities by building pumps for clean water; donating of quality coffee seedlings to rebuild stock and other initiatives. In 2019, three Mount Elgon coffees were blind-tasted by a qualified Q-Grader in Europe and all scored specialty status.

SMALLHOLDING COFFEE FARMING

Carico works towards making a real difference in the lives of the small-scale farmers who grow and process our coffee. Smallholdings have a lower carbon footprint than conventional methods – yet still produce excellent coffee. Our vision is to produce the finest coffee and sell it around the world and reinvest in the communities which grow the crops. We aim to do this by providing fair trade and investing in community development.

OUR SPECIALITY UGANDAN BUGISU COFFEE

Bugisu is home to almost 20% of the world’s coffee farmers, Uganda’s coffee is prized for its taste and versatility which means it ends up as an ingredient for some of the world’s most known coffee blends. Only now is it being put to the forefront globally as single origin. Carico’s coffees are naturally farmed, inter-cropped and grown without any manufactured neither chemical fertilisers nor pesticides. Grown under shade of indigenous trees, this allows the coffee fruit to grow and ripen slowly. The result is a harder bean which is then hand-picked when optimally ripe.

Carico’s coffees originate in Uganda, the largest coffee exporter in East Africa and one of the top ten global coffee producers and exporters. The high altitude, rich volcanic soils and orientation of the sun to the coffee trees in Bugisu mean the concept of terroir for wine is similar in the coffee industry. The high quality of the Bugisu Arabica coffee has been known for decades. In recent years increasing numbers of coffee buyers are appreciating that the soil, the elevation and the climate in Uganda create outstanding coffees.

Carico Global offers single origin, planted in volcanic loam, shade-grown coffee that is naturally farmed, inter-cropped and grown without any manufactured neither chemical fertilizers nor pesticides from 2000m/1500m altitude. Coffee cherries are hand-picked as they ripen, processed at the co-operative using the more delicate process known as wet-processing and are regularly turned as they dry in the sun. Carico coffee is naturally farmed, ecological biodiversity and directly traded from SW Bududa District and Sironko District.

BIODIVERSITY

Supporting these communities is more than about coffee, good coffee or a good price paid to the farmer for coffee.

Mount Elgon National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest together have 142 species on the The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN) Red List. The list is the world’s most comprehensive source on the global conservation status of animal, fungi and plant species which are indicators of our planet’s biodiversity, and therefore, its health. Organic certification and consumer behavior changes are often offered as solutions to support more sustainable livelihoods. However, for remote farming communities located at high altitudes, organic certification can add significant production effort and compliance cost. These costs can ultimately increase the carbon footprint of their farming. Meanwhile, lack of information about meaningful actions and the separation of roles along global value chains has led to consumers wanting to make a difference, but being unable to contribute towards change.
